“Deceptive Clarity explores the fine line between chaos and energetic expression. Cloonan’s paintings – which consist of portals demarcated by black outlines – give a glimpse into an alternate reality in which abrasion and finesse are balanced to create a singular environment. Rife with thick brush strokes, bold colors, and delicate lines, Cloonan’s paintings are textured and complex. Viewers may be amazed by the prospect of healing and rejuvenation that accompanies the experience of seeing Cloonan’s emotionally charged compositions.
According to Cloonan, “My paintings reveal the stark reality instead of denying its struggle for the sake of upholding a facade. The surface lends itself to chaos. It was made for this abuse, this obstruction, this abrasion. It presents itself as a possibility, as an open palette for receiving energy.”
Kayla Cloonan was born and raised in Port Charlotte, Florida. She received her B.F.A. in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2013.
